about

Fourth single, Linen Girls contextualises Flanagan’s wide-ranging experiences by painting the picture of an artist drifting between two competing worlds.
Living as a bi-racial person, Flanagan reports feeling she needs to fit between two worlds, negotiating constant internal compromise to get through day-to-day.
“It has taken endless amounts of energy to carve out a spot for myself amidst the constant scrutinisation of my white and black heritage. When I’m exposed to ongoing casual racism, when people’s perception of my fair skin juxtaposes so powerfully with their perception of the skin of my peers, I wonder: are we too far away to ever get too close?”.

lyrics

LINEN GIRLS

how often does it cross your mind
linen girls all dressed in white
drinking in afternoon light
while all you know is another life
tell me does it cross your mind?
tell me does it cross your mind?

how often do you speak your mind?
when differences adhere, arise
your hand is forced to make a choice
they’ll never know the sacrifice ah ah
so tell me do you speak your mind?
so tell me do you speak your mind?
Are we too far away
To ever ever get too close ever ever get too close
We tip toe day to day
never saying what the other knows saying what the other knows

Are we too far away
To ever ever get too close
walking on ice and stone
Never saying what the other knows
