about

Inspired by themes of gentrification, imperfection and embellishments of Flanagan’s tropical home town of Darwin; ‘Aralia’ explores the beauty found in her hometowns eccentricities, misgivings and innate beauty. The allure of ‘Aralia’ arrives in its close examination of how the devoted few who see and remember what beauty was like before the change.
Bolstering the narrative is Sydney-based artist, Sarah Belkner’s gleaming string quartet arrangements that weave through the sonic palette. “I love the sweeping strings in Motown numbers and old nostalgic Hollywood movie soundtracks so much. There’s a lot of that love and joy in Sarah’s arrangements,” Flanagan says.

lyrics

Oh Aralia
it breaks my heart to watch you fade
revere the modest and the vain
here’s hoping you’ll never change

Oh aralia
tales of your beauty unbeknown to most
a crucial path to the eastern post
an intimacy only few would boast

and i’m one of those
fools who fall in love
each time I cut across
the beauty in the still
as the broken glistens with the new

Oh Aralia
Gracefully guide me down to the shore
Where memories are lost and born
where dreamers hopes are tired and worn

Oh Aralia
pandanus wilting withering
with each blink humidity stings
my eyes as each morning sings

to those poor fools
who fall in love
each time they cut across
see the beauty in the still
As the broken glisten with the new
